Why Alliance

Why Alliance?

In 1948, a collective of Southland farmers came together to establish Alliance Freezing Company Limited, with the aim of processing and promoting premium-quality meat and associated products to international markets.
Alliance history

The initial processing facility, which remains our largest to this day, was inaugurated in Lorneville in 1960. In 1980, the company underwent a change in ownership structure, transitioning into a co-operative.

Today, Alliance takes great pride in being New Zealand’s only 100 per cent farmer-owned red meat co-operative. We carry this same sense of pride and dedication into every facet of our operations, including the well-being of our people, the vitality of our rural communities, and the health of the planet.

We continuously invest in technology, our people, and robust systems, as we strive to uphold the highest standards of environmental sustainability to ensure this success continues in the years ahead. We proudly employ 5,000 people across New Zealand, as well as in the United Kingdom, Asia, and the United States. Our role as a significant employer in the rural communities where we operate is a responsibility we take seriously, and we recognise the privilege of being an integral part of New Zealand’s primary sector.

Successful farming is about
partnerships

As a co-operative, we partner with our farmers to produce the world’s finest red meat. We exist to create prosperity for our farmers by taking the results of their expertise and hard work to deliver healthy, natural food products to consumers all over the world.

We were created by farmers who recognised that coming together as a farmer owned co-operative would allow them to capture economic value from the full value chain.

Because farmers own the company, it allows them to have control over their own destiny by providing access to processing capability when they need it as well as access to global markets for their produce.

For many farmers, we provide 90 per cent or more of their annual income. This money feeds the family, buys clothes, educates the kids, pays medical bills, supports sporting endeavours, allows them to invest in their businesses, and is invested in rural and other communities around NZ. We directly make a difference to our farmers’ lives and so they deserve our best efforts.

We are also there to help when the going gets tough. During droughts, we can use our full resources of the co-operative to move stock out of drought affected areas, while also maximising our plant capacity to ensure farmers could get their animals off the land when they needed to. We can take these kinds of actions, because, as a co-operative, we act solely in the best interests of our farmers.
